Mrs. Helen J. “Lady Helen” Williamson is the third child of the late Bishop William Clark Bates and District Missionary Bessie M. Ross Bates. She grew up as a typical preacher’s kid, receiving her education in the Indianapolis Public School system. After graduating high school, she attended the Jordan College of Music at Butler University for her vocal training. She also attended Vincennes University studying Spanish as a second language.
Coming from a family of gifted preachers, teachers, singers and musicians, Lady Helen and her siblings spent lots of time on the road with their father providing music and singing with him as he endeavored to preach the gospel. Many of their travels took them through the states of Mississippi, Kentucky, Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana. In 1976, Lady Helen recorded her first record, her own arrangement of Mahalia Jackson’s “Move Up a Little Higher”. Two years later, she recorded her first album entitled “Thank You Lord” for Gospel Roots, the gospel subsidiary of TK Records. At that time, her fellow artists or label mates included Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, Betty Wright, and K.C. & The Sunshine band to name a few.
The study of God’s word has always remained at the head of Lady Helen’s life. She has spent many years studying at the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education under some of the most prominent preachers and teachers across the nation. She is also active in the National Baptist Convention, USA Inc., the General Missionary Baptist State Convention, Inc., as well as the Union Missionary Baptist District Association.
Lady Helen is the wife of Pastor James C. Williamson, the pastor of Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church where she not only serves as First Lady, but also as Minister of Music, the Women’s Department & Sunday School teacher as well as counselor for the Deaconess and Ministers Wives Auxiliary. She is also the proud mother of two, Rev. Carlton Lewis, III, lead singer of the Grammy award winning world famous Dixie Hummingbirds of Philadelphia, Pa, and Shanika Danielle Lewis, CEO of Majestic Journey Talent Agency, LLC of Orlando, Florida, and the proud grandmother of two, Carlton Lewis IV, and little Miss Caryn Michelle Lewis.
In her spare time Lady Helen enjoys traveling and seeing much of the world and enjoying the beauty of God’s creation. It is her sincere desire that God would get the glory through the gifts that He has so graciously given her and that His people would be helped through them.
